Some have marveled when learning that I name each of my art glass beads. Well, marveled might be a polite way of putting it. They look at me like I’m a little crazy!! Let me explain.
It takes some time to develop the image I have in my head into a finished piece of art glass. The glass and I become one as I melt the long pencil thin pieces of glass into the design I am imagining over an 1800-degree flame. The molten glass and I enter a dance as I try to manipulate it into the image I want.
I am so involved in working with the molten glass and creating its final design that I become very attached to the final bead. So, yes, each one gets a name! And you ask – How do you come up with the name? Here are some examples.
I used to live just outside of Denver in the mountains. Loved going skiing. So, this art glass was inspired by the magic of my ski tracks in the snow. In this design I capture streams of white glass encased in clear glass. > See the collection
On one of my visits to Venice I was fortunate to dine at the Cipriani Hotel on the island of Giudecca across the lagoon from St. Mark’s Square. A very posh dining experience and a wonder I could even afford to pay for my dinner! Back home I recalled the lavish experience by creating my classy Cipriani Jewelry Collection that combines gold and silver leaf under clear glass with sterling silver accent pieces.
Easy to explain this name. A few years ago I rented a home in Taos, New Mexico for a month. What a wonderful experience being around all that art and spirituality! So, the colors of transparent turquoise and amber glass in this design were inspired by the art that surrounded me in Taos. Ok, and yes, there might have been some tequila consumed also!!
Every day I realize how very blessed I am to be a glass artist. Life is good!
